Hexham has long been one of Northumberland’s most sought-after places to live. A historic market town on the River Tyne, it combines independent shops, a strong cultural calendar and some of the county’s finest countryside, all within reach of Newcastle.
Heritage and character
At the heart of the town stands Hexham Abbey, founded in AD674 and today a centre for worship, music and community events. Around it, the market place, Moot Hall and independent shops give the town its distinctive character. Hexham sits in Hadrian’s Wall country, with Roman forts and museums such as Vindolanda close by.
Getting around
Hexham has its own railway station on the Tyne Valley Line, with regular services to Newcastle in the east and Carlisle in the west. Newcastle is around 20 miles away and typically takes about 30 minutes by road or 40 minutes by train. The A69 provides the main route across the county.
Schools and amenities
Hexham is served by first, middle and high schools under Northumberland’s three-tier system, and Queen Elizabeth High School is the town’s principal secondary school. The town also has a hospital, leisure centre, library and a good range of supermarkets, cafés and restaurants.
Culture, leisure and the outdoors
Hexham’s calendar is notably full for a town of its size. 2026 marks the 20th anniversary of the Hexham Book Festival, the Abbey hosts concerts throughout the year, and the Hexham Abbey Festival of Music and Arts returns in September. Hexham Racecourse, Hexham Golf Club and Tynedale Golf Club cater for sport, while the surrounding valleys offer walking, cycling and some of the region’s best views. Rightmove has also named Hexham the happiest place to live in Great Britain in its Happy at Home index.
